A climate smart coffee policy consultation workshop was held in Goroka on November 27, 2025, bringing together various coffee partners and stakeholders in the coffee industry.

The workshop, facilitated by Mr. Mawe Gonapa, a PhD Researcher at the Australian National University, aimed to gather views from stakeholders on the climate smart coffee policy principles and practices.

CIC Chief Executive Officer, Charles Dambui said the Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) is taking the lead on this initiative, recognizing the need for a mechanism to support climate smart coffee practices. Dambui said climate change is a global concern for all and for the PNG coffee industry, the need to come up with this policy and address practical ways to assist farmers adapt and mitigate, while improving coffee production is important.

Gonapa, whose research work is on coffee carbon sequestration and trade in coffee agroforestry systems in Papua New Guinea, is tasked with developing the climate smart coffee policy framework.

“This policy framework will focus on both mitigation and adaptation in the coffee industry thereby enhancing productivity, efficiency, and profitability in the face of climate change,” Gonapa said.

He added that the CIC is engaging with stakeholders at different levels, from policy makers to institutions and growers, to gauge their views on this new policy document. “This is the first climate change policy for coffee in the agriculture sector in PNG.”

Gonapa said the enabling policy guidelines are already in place, and carbon markets are available. “The next step is to certify carbon credits and work with landowners, coffee cooperatives, and provincial governments to access the carbon trade by working closely with the Climate Change Development Authority (CCDA) and relevant organisations both locally and internationally.

A validation workshop is expected to be held soon to present the draft document to experts and authorities before it becomes the climate smart coffee policy for the PNG coffee industry.
